cat girl without salad is an april fools browser game made by wayforeward in 2016 which was later ported to switch and even given a physical release from LRG last year. its short, cute and one of the funniest games ive ever played and despite its short length i liked it enough that the whole LRG release was more than worth it to me. it:s a shmup with some silly genre gimmicks at its core, where usually you would collect weapons from enemies, here you collect game carts and these all play differently with their patterns and this is the main draw here, the sports gun shoots golf balls that bounce around, the DDR gun is a rhythm game, rpg gun is turn based and theres a few others too, they're all super fun to play, except the DDR gun which i found too tough to use, and some are even a little broken like the golf gun and the puzzle gun which can screenclear if you get a 3 match, it's super unique and a good gimmick that never gets old because of the short length, the game is very short though, since its basically a shitpost its only about 40 mins at most with no real replay value, you really only have 3 stages and its not a difficult game at all, i only died once and i'm really not that good at these kinds of games at all, so its actually a good beginner shmup if you need one! though you may get more out of the jokes if you do like shmups already because the weapon gimmicks are a super cute take on the usual formula, bosses are gun too, even though you only have 3 of them, the final one especially was super cool with her she used her own game gimmick carts, it all plays really well :). soundtrack (a wayforeward regular involved with games like shantae and double dragon neon) is fantastic too, again its a short ost with only like 4 songs in it but those 4 songs are all really good, i'd even argue some of wayforewards best, every song is amazing, RPG galaxy and especially kawaii galaxy are the standout tracks to me, i kind of wish i got the OST with it.

the games real strength is the writing though, its rare i really like comedy games because i just find so many fall flat for me, sure theres some i like, neptunia has its moments, cupid parasite and variable barricade are certified hood classics and matt hazard has a lot of :) dudeman charm, but this one may be one of my favs yet for comedy, kebako is such a fun character and honestly could carry her own sequel, just a shitposting force for chaos, but a good one that spams cheezeburger memes instead of the twitter kind that sends slurs and harasses people. she really carries the game and christina vee does an amazing job with her, sure her writing could be seen by a lesser player as being "cringy" but the use of cringe is cringe itself and its so endearing that i think if you did call it cringe, its more just showing how irony poisoned and joyless you are instead of really speaking for the quality of the game. the villains are all super fun, the desperate hostboy popstar, pretentious chef and an evil kebako that steals VHS tapes, its a funny story with funny people and if you have the sense of humour for it you'll get a lot out of it, its a really memorable experiance for me, just a no thoughts :) time, game has that vibe down perfectly, bubbly colourful designs and cute enemies and dumb characters that are all just here for a good dumb time.

i didn't really have a ton to write about this one, in the time it took to read this you could have beat a whole third of the game and you should go and do so, it's fun and dumb and just a perfect april fools game, its hard to say if the LRG ver would be worth tracking down though, for me it was because i love wayforeward and this game and LRGs april fools games are always a fun order, but if you enjoy it it could be worth it, especially for WF fans, and you should be one because WF are one of the best devs in the buisness i think, games like shantae, river city girls, the better than the movie mummy demastered and especially bloodrayne betrayal are all some of my fav games of their respective gens and the company deserves way more fans than they already have, i hope i enjoy shantae advance as much as i enjoyed this when that eventually releases and until then i'll continue to be sad we never had a real followup to this, sure the joke is that shes a character without a franchise or a real game, but the writing and characters here are so charming and funny that i think a real stab at it could work super well, hopefully it eventually happens.
